Original painting in the Ashmolean Museum, WA1933.2. ‘The Forest Fire’, Piero di Cosimo (1462-1522), c. This poem also contained many a scathing satire of organised religion. One interpretation of the painting is that it refers to an account of the birth of human civilisation from primitive savagery in On the Nature of Things, a philosophical poem by the Roman Epicurean Lucretius.

Curiously, two of the animals, a pig and a deer, have human-like faces, which scholars believe may have been added in at a later stage. The painting shows a fire bursting out from the centre of a dark forest, with birds and animals scattering in all directions. The pig-person of the Freethinker is based on a detail of The Forest Fire, a painting by Piero di Cosimo from around 1505, and now in the Ashmolean Museum. A few centuries later, the early Church Fathers looked upon the Epicureans as atheists bound for hell. The association between pigs and freethought arguably goes back all the way to classical antiquity, when they became associated with the followers of the Greek philosopher Epicurus. In addition, the work includes many new quotations from recent authors, a refreshed design, and a complete review of spelling forms and defining vocabulary, making it the most authoritative reference work available for both modern and historical English.‘The animal I really dig / Above all others is the pig,’ wrote Roald Dahl.

The New Shorter was prepared under the editorship of Lesley Brown 1980-1993. The Third Edition (1944) contained an appendix of addenda and corrigenda, and this edition was reprinted several times with corrections and additions, the most significant being in 1973, with enlarged addenda (now running to over 70 pages) and a major revision of all the etymologies. The Second Edition, published in 1936, contained about 3,000 revisions and additions. The First Edition was published in 1933, in two volumes.
